The Amazing Race for Team Building
This tool is for local church teams that do camps and are in challenge 3 or 4 on the disciplemaking pathway (5 challenges of Christ). This Amazing Race will help teams to grow as a team, learn to actively disciple, and to learn how to resolve or work through conflict. It is a time of disciplemaking, team building and high intensity competition (both personally and against other teams)
The Amazing Race will hopefully help teams to:
learn to resolve conflict
work more fully together.
serve more effectively at camp together.
learn how to disciple as they are going.
What does it look like?
Three day/three night event.
Traveling around their country and possibly to another country.
4-8 activities a day varying from mental to physical and emotional challenges.
Equipping young leaders
As the local church participate in this event their leaders would need to have a day of training about how to lead their team well and communicate it to their church.
Planning schedule the national team for this event
Plan an interest meeting for helpers (January)
Establish team of helpers and give three different commitment types for them to choose from (February)
Most commitment (AKA “city boss” which means that the person would have a responsibility over a whole city at the race. It would include planning tasks and locations and making sure everything is running smoothly. Only a couple of people needed here.)
Medium commitment (Help city bosses come up with tasks and be able to help at stations.)
Lowest commitment (Be present at some meetings and give ideas.)
This was a key part at the Amazing Race Slovakia because Alica knew how much she could rely on people that showed interest in helping and also with what kind of questions she could go to specific people helping. Also, people have different amounts of time that they can dedicate to helping with the Race so it helps to have 3 different types of commitments so they can choose which one is doable for them and they do not feel pressured into anything.
Run a meeting with all helpers every other week (January through March). The first couple of meetings might be longer as people will brainstorm and start from scratch. Assign a “homework” for all city bosses after every meeting to keep the process going (for example, looking for locations of tasks, getting helpers for stations, getting materials and helping with team leaders meetings).
Create a registration form on EMS (April)
Continue checking on city bosses at least once a week to make sure they are staying on top of their responsibilities
Open registration for teams (beginning of May)
Host an in person meeting with all helpers (make sure all city bosses are present). This was crucial because we were able to get a lot more done in person than over a ZOOM call (beginning of May). Consider having another in person meeting with helpers before the Race.
Finish creating tasks and write them into the roadblock template (mid May)
Print all road blocks and route infos (end of May)
Create a packing list for all teams (end of May)
Host a ZOOM call meeting for all team leaders and have a training session with them. This training should include some important information about the race but also the spiritual aspect of the Race and how to encourage team members during the Race when strength and energy are low. It could also include training on different personalities, etc. (beginning of June)
Ask all city bosses to do a mock run with random people ideally who are not from that particular city. (beginning of June). Adjust any road blocks after doing the mock run.
Planning schedule the local church for this event
Encourage teams to participate in the Race. (April)
Help with fundraiser for the Amazing Race (April)
Inform Race leaders about members of the church that want to participate but might have troubles. (May)
Amazing Race challenge ideas from Team Slovakia:
The very first challenge of our Amazing Race was for the teams to find their bandanas. Every team had a different color of bandana. Teams with less members had their bandanas hidden extra carefully so it’s fair. After they found all their bandanas they had to come back to the station leader. This also helped with differentiating teams by color for tracking information through the race.
The second task was for every team to get 4 tokens. Each token was earned by solving a riddle in English. The riddle’s answers led them to the location of the next riddle. The first riddle was given to them at the place where they got the road block.
The next task was for the team to find a missing team member that was captured by someone at the beginning of this leg. Basically, we had the teams pick one person that would leave their team for some time and their task was to find their team member. The team member that was taken was close to the place where they were solving riddles. After they solved all the riddles and got their 4 tokens, they were given a picture of a tower where their missing team member was with some instructions. Their task was to find their person. We even had people who were watching all the team members that were captured and when a team got close to them they attacked them with water balloons.
Their next task was to invite a stranger to dinner. We gave them 5 EUR and their task was to find a stranger who was not a team member of another race team and have dinner with them. As soon as they found a stranger they were supposed to find the Amazing Race leader and show her the stranger which was also the end of the leg. Then they had free time to dine with their stranger and even have some good conversations. A lot of the teams loved this task.
There is a well of natural water in Slovakia but the water smells pretty bad. Each team member had to drink the water to complete this task. The girls had to drink 0,5l and the guys had to drink 0,7l. After they finished drinking the water there was a water riddle they had to solve to be able to complete this task. They had the option to get up to 3 hints but each hint came with 3 minutes penalty.
Another task was to memorize one part of John 1 as a team and write it on a piece of paper.
The next task was for the team to pick one person from their team who is very observant. That person was sent up a tower and was supposed to pay attention to everything around him/her. After he/she went up the tower there was a set of questions that person had to correctly answer. One of the questions was asking about the amount of steps that person took. The person had to go up the tower as many times as it took them to correctly answer all the questions.
There is a statue of an executioner in one city in Slovakia and the task was to find 3 strangers who would be willing to take a picture with the whole team and the stranger would put their head under the ax.
Another task was for the whole team to find 5 bastions and take pictures with all of them. The bastions were all over the city and if you did not know the city, it was fairly difficult. The team had to show all 5 pictures as a proof to be able to complete the task and get another clue.
This was one of the hardest tasks of our Amazing Race. The team was supposed to play rock, paper, scissors with one of the Amazing Race leaders. Each team had to win 5 times in a row. The team members had to take turns and no one could play twice in a row. Talk about being mean.
Many of our tasks were to find a specific place that is not very well known and a lot of the time the teams had to ask strangers for help.
We found a big lake in the city where the Amazing Race ended and one of the tasks was for everyone to swim across the lake. If teams had extra money they could buy a floatie at the lake. Most teams loved this because it was a hot summer day and they have been running for 3 days and it felt nice to cool off in the lake.
Some tips:
It’s best if teams are an equal size. We’d recommend more than three on a team, but less than eight. The bigger the teams, the longer it usually takes them to complete challenges.
Do make sure you do a practice of each day! This will help you understand potential problems that aren’t always clear when you read something.
Make clear rules about what modes of transport they can take and how they can use their phones (if for anything other than picture taking!).
