Dear Small Group Leader,

We desire to help you facilitate a group conversation as students chew on the talk. Each night will have a general direction that the questions are leading. Good small group discussions lead the group in a direction. Often God will lead your group differently than what’s on this paper. You will have to discern His leading as you lead the group; that’s always a better option than reading word for word each question written below. I often open the small group discussion with, “What stood out to you?” Their answers will give you a great idea of where the Spirit may be leading. Remember to take note of their answers (or un-answers) so that you can follow up with them one-on-one later. Also, make sure your questions connect to the talk and testimonies given.

Here are some tips as you ask your own questions.

Good questions:

  • encourage thinking about the topic, not just remembering what was said.

  • can be answered in a variety of ways. After one person answers, you can ask it again and hear different things from someone else.

  • are interesting and engaging

  • lead people somewhere

  • can be restated again

  • clarify

  • allow for application (“How do you see this in the world around you?”)

  • get people to share experiences (“What have you experienced?”)

  • get people to share their opinions (“What is your opinion?”)

  • get people to share their feelings (“How do you feel?”)

  • get people to share their observations (“What do you see or observe?”)

What kind of questions are not good?

  • questions that have only one correct answer

  • “read my mind” questions

  • “yes” or “no” questions

  • questions that can be answered with one word

  • rhetorical questions

  • questions that have answers that are too obvious or easy

  • questions that are too difficult

What are tips for leading a good discussion?

  • call on people individually

  • give them time to think (count to 10 before saying anything)

  • rephrase their answer and highlight what was true in what they said

  • respond, nod, thank them, “good,” give them feedback

  • interact with what they are saying

  • take the other side, use tension, and challenge in a friendly way

  • make sure no one looks stupid or is shamed; remember that people are putting themselves on the line when they express their opinion. This also might be new for them.

  • look people in the eye; engage

Random questions you can ask if you are stuck:

  • Ever broken a bone? Tell us the story.

  • What was your first year of high school like?

  • Dogs or cats, why?

  • What stood out to you? (I use this all the time, and I usually open with this)

  • What was the most memorable part of this week for you?  Why?

  • What have you learned this week?

  • What new things are you thinking about because of being here?

  • Does anyone have any questions about what we've been talking about that you'd like to ask?  Anything you're wondering about?

  • Which of the talks from camp has been the most interesting or challenging for you?

  • Which of the people in the stories you’ve heard about do you most relate to?

  • What do you think the difference is between “religion” and “a personal relationship with God?”

  • Is there anything we (leaders) can pray about for you?
