Opis
English lessons and printables for our after-school group in 2023. Emotional awareness, relationships, character, holidays, etc.

English Time
-Usually around 20-25 minutes (depends on if Grow time needs more and/or big group activity that day)
-Be flexible! Come prepared with enough activities and ready for the full time you are given for English. However, sometimes a game will take longer or something needs to shift during the schedule. English can be a flexible time and shortened because in reality most of Grow Trnov is already in English. :) If you don’t get through all your planned activities- that’s totally fine. Now you have things for the next time you lead English!
-We are using English throughout our time together, so this time is used for more specific teaching of maybe new vocabulary or to practice some harder English concepts
-Get them speaking and being active! Keep it interactive
-Lots of short activities is better than one long activity
Tips:
-Keep kids moving! Think of ways to have them move to learn (charades, run to get a clue, partner share while standing and changing partners, etc)
-Try to vary the schedule. For example, if you start with some more instruction or sitting part, then make sure the next activity is more interactive or active. Then you can go back to another 5 minute chunk of instruction.
-Find ways to get the kids talking! If there are a lot of kids, have them share with a partner instead of only in the large group.
-Talk with the person leading Grow time for that day. Is it a topic that would be helpful for you to teach vocabulary on? Or have a discussion or journal time about? Sometimes we even combined Grow and English time.
Planning your lesson:
-Think of a topic or theme
-Think of key vocabulary words that are important to know when talking about this theme
-If there is an American holiday coming up, it can be fun to teach about traditions and use the holiday as the theme
-Sometimes it is helpful to have the English lesson be an extension of Grow time. For instance, last year when we talked about feelings at Grow time, we used English time to brainstorm emotion/feeling words and did activities around these words. Or maybe you use English time to write a reflection or goals from Grow Time in their journals
